There have been many years in which the LGBTQ+ experience has been conspicuously absent from mainstream cinema however, the year 2021 has been a particularly strong and significant one. When it comes to LGBTQ+ cinema, it has historically been overlooked, or LGBTQ+ characters have fallen into tropes that have failed to expand or serve a secondary purpose to central characters when they have appeared in mainstream media. The year 2021 saw the reopening of many cinemas around the world, allowing us to once again enjoy the screening of a plethora of incredible films throughout the year in actual theatres.
